Fueling the Future
Interactive data visualization of global progress toward SDGs.
The United Nations (UN) implemented the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 as a set of global targets to achieve by 2030. Yet, as of 2023, more than 50% of the SDGs had seen inadequate progress.
How might we translate findings from a UN statistical report into a visual and interactive yet accurate narrative that broader audiences can understand?
About the solution
Fueling the Future compares recent progress across seven regions towards achieving the SDGs, examining the intersections between living below the poverty line, reliance on polluting fuels and technologies, and mortality.
In doing so, it highlights at-risk populations and how insufficient access to crucial resources, such as clean fuels and healthcare facilities, persists.
Graph breakdown
Does extreme poverty cause populations to rely on polluting fuels? And does using polluting fuels contribute to mortality?
While keeping in mind that correlation does not equal causation, viewers are able consider these questions and draw their own conclusions.

Takeaways
The biggest challenge of this project? The data source: a 313-page statistical report. It took extensive deliberation to craft a narrative, especially with information being unavailable for certain years.
Designing this project taught me how to clearly and logically represent data while also providing the user the agency to filter and compare different years and regions.
